Herb and Ervin Kolbe began by repairing window frames and building sash out of their mother's wash house on the family dairy farm near Marathon, WI, where Kolbe & Kolbe Millwork was born. In 1946, the brothers purchased a 2,100 sq. ft. building and relocated the business to Wausau, WI, hiring their brother Walter as their first employee. In 1948, Kolbe branched out to the prehung door market and acquired a cabinet shop. In 1966-70, the company introduced its first product line of wood double hungs, sliders, casements, and awnings. Production expanded to aluminum clad windows in 1972-77, and in 1995, a facility was established in Manawa, WI, to manufacture vinyl windows and doors. In 1997, the Wausau facility expanded, adding 250,000 sq. ft. to the building.
