The institution began in 2010 as a community program of the University of SC School of Music, originally known as Suzuki Strings at USC. It was started by violin professor Dr. Rebecca Hunter. In 2017, Dr. Samara Humbert-Hughes and her team of seven teachers decided to begin a nonprofit to manage the growing program. The academy maintains an affiliation with the University of SC School of Music to support its Master of Violin/Viola Pedagogy program and to provide students with access to university concert facilities. All teachers hold university music degrees on their instruments and have undergone special training in the Suzuki Method governed by the Suzuki Association of the Americas. The teaching staff includes core teachers who handle both private and group classes, as well as neighborhood teachers who are local instructors trained in the method. The academy strives to create a positive and nurturing environment where parents and teachers work together to foster the child’s success.
