GREEN Upstate High School

GREEN Upstate High School is a high school in Simpsonville, SC, serving students in grades 9 through 12 as part of the GREEN Charter Schools network. The school pairs personalized instruction with a STEM-focused curriculum that includes renewable energy education, and its teachers work to meet students at their current achievement levels while supporting individual academic growth. Students are challenged to think critically, discover their strengths, and take ownership of their future, whether that path leads to college, a career, military service, or another direction. The campus offers Project Lead The Way, athletics, arts, and student organizations, and GUHS holds at-large membership in the SC High School League, which expands opportunities for its teams.

Principal David Poindexter leads the school, bringing experience that includes service in the United States Marine Corps and work with students in the SC Department of Juvenile Justice and the SC Department of Corrections. His stated approach centers on strong relationships, high expectations, and being firm, fair, and consistent, with restorative practices and collaboration among teachers, families, and students.

The school's academic program includes a Gifted and Talented program recognized through the state of SC, with gifted classes beginning in third grade, and an Advanced Program for middle grades offering small-group instruction in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Average class sizes are approximately 20 students, with two to four classes per grade level, which the school notes allows more one-on-one time between teachers and students. As a public charter school, GREEN Upstate High is tuition-free, admits students through a lottery application process, accommodates students with IEPs and 504 plans, and offers free and reduced-price lunch to eligible students.

GREEN Upstate High School sits on Bridgeway Blvd in Simpsonville. The school's mascot is the Owl, and campus life includes cheerleading, athletics, and student art exhibitions.
