Simmons-Pinckney Middle School is a school in Charleston, SC. It serves middle level students on the peninsula, offering opportunities for students to explore interests, develop talents, and engage in creative and collaborative experiences in the classroom and beyond. The school provides personalized learning tools and resources, guidance to help students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally, and a student-to-educator ratio built around individualized attention and strong teacher-student connections. It participates in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program under Charleston County School District's free and reduced-price meal policy.
The school's history reaches back to a building constructed in 1949 to educate African-American children in grades 1 through 7, then named A. Burnett Rhett Elementary. It remained an elementary school until the late 1970s, when it shifted to middle level classes and became Rhett Middle School. The school moved to a Rutledge Street facility in 1982 and closed three years later. Between 2005 and 2012, middle school students were served in the Rhett building again as Burke A+ Academy, and in 2012 the school became Burke Middle. In 2016 it was renamed in honor and memory of two Charleston figures: Phillip Simmons, a blacksmith and iron worker whose artistry can be seen throughout the city, and the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, pastor of Mother Emmanuel AME, civil rights activist, and state senator. Reimagined in 2015, it remains the only neighborhood middle school on the peninsula.
The school sits at 244 President Street on the Burke High School campus, with entry through the Sumter Street front office. Harmon Field Marker is steps away, and Harmon Field park, the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center, Burke High School, Rhett School, and the Herbert Hasell Aquatic Facility are all within about a tenth of a mile.
Simmons-Pinckney Middle School anchors its peninsula neighborhood as the area's only neighborhood middle school, carrying forward a name that honors two figures in Charleston's history.
