The center was established in 1928 as the Charleston Chapter of the Crippled Children's Society, originally providing educational services for the orthopedically disabled, before expanding to serve children with a wide range of disabilities and special needs. It is named after Charles Webb, a well-known advocate in the disabilities and special needs community. In 1993, the center became a program of the Disabilities Board of Charleston County and relocated from Calhoun Street in historic Charleston to its current West Ashley location. The facility includes four classrooms, a sensory integration room sponsored by the Coastal Community Foundation, a large outdoor playground with adaptive equipment, and a nurse's station. The curriculum is built around success-oriented experiences and activities with positive reinforcement, praise, and affection, and each classroom features learning centers such as a sand and water table, art, reading, listening, housekeeping, blocks, music, and manipulatives. Music therapy is provided once a week for thirty minutes.
Charles Webb Center is a Family Support Services program of the Disabilities Board of Charleston County, a SC Department of Social Services Licensed Child Care facility, and an ABC Enhanced provider. The staff operates at a 1:5 ratio and includes speech, occupational, and physical therapists, early interventionists, service coordinators, and a full-time LPN. Every staff member completes more than fifty hours of initial training before joining the center, undergoes state and federal background checks, and is trained in first aid, pediatric and adult CPR, and pediatric and adult AED. All teachers meet DSS Licensing requirements for education and experience. The center is led by Director Wanda Pointer and is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1611 Evergreen Street.
Serving Charleston families for nearly a century, Charles Webb Center has built one of the longest-running programs in the region dedicated to the growth, development, and self-esteem of children with special needs.
