Founded in 1967, the Canterbury House campus is a non-profit, independent living, age-in-place senior community sponsored by the Anglican Diocese of SC. The campus consists of two buildings: Canterbury House East, a four-story building with 46 assisted units, and Canterbury House West, a thirteen-story high-rise with 204 assisted units. Five units in Canterbury House East are designed for the physically disabled. The community is available to anyone 62 or older who meets annual income guidelines set by HUD.

The facilities are owned by the Episcopal Diocesan Housing, Inc. and Elderly Housing, Inc., entities controlled by a common Board of Directors. The board includes a resident member, four seats appointed by the Bishops of the Episcopal Diocese of SC and the Anglican Diocese of SC, and six seats from the community at large. Since its restructuring in 2023, the Right Reverend Ruth Woodliff-Stanley, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of SC, and the Right Reverend Charles F. "Chip" Edgar III, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of SC, have jointly served on the Board of Directors.

The mission of the organization is to provide safe, comfortable, and affordable housing while promoting the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of its residents. The Canterbury family is committed to a program of stewardship respecting each person’s rights, dignity, and independence. Keeping residents living independently in their own apartments with additional supportive services has been mission critical for over 50 years. In 2025, the Board’s Chairman and President, Fred Fabian, embarked on a mission to expand Canterbury to meet the needs of the growing community.
