Cane Bay Family YMCA of Charleston

Cane Bay Family YMCA of Charleston is a non-profit organization in Charleston, SC. It operates as part of the YMCA of Greater Charleston, with a mission to improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities by connecting them with opportunities based on Christian values that strengthen spirit, mind, and body. The organization focuses on three core areas: developing youth, promoting healthy living, and growing the community. Membership provides access to facilities and opportunities to get involved locally, while donations and volunteer partnerships help sustain the programs that enrich the area.

The facility includes a 5,000 square foot Berkeley County Library and is designed with a primary focus on community health and wellness and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (S.T.E.A.M.). The campus features a teen center, child development area, youth wellness area, gymnasium, and athletic fields. Featured programs include personal fitness training with certified trainers, aquatics for developing swimming skills, and youth sports to promote healthy competition. The organization also hosts various events throughout the year, ranging from holiday celebrations to special community gatherings. A brick campaign is underway to raise funds for a youth scholarship program, supporting access to the facility for children.

The broader YMCA of Greater Charleston has a history rooted in the Cannon Street YMCA, established in 1866 just after the Civil War. That historic location is the oldest continuously operating YMCA developed for African Americans and has impacted the lives of notable figures including Harvey Gantt and James Clyburn. The Cannon Street YMCA provided critical care services, literacy training, teen development programs, and senior citizen services. In conjunction with the Lowcountry Food Bank, it has fed over 10,000 children each year. The Cane Bay Family YMCA continues this legacy of service in the Summerville area, located at 1655 Cane Bay Blvd.

The organization holds a rating of 4.10 based on 7 reviews, reflecting a positive experience for the customers who have shared their feedback. It stands as a local hub for fitness, education, and community engagement in the Greater Charleston area.
