Built as the Winnetka Congregational Church, the structure’s origins trace to May 18, 1904, when Pastor Benjamin Severance Winchester advocated for a new building. Douglas Smith and his wife purchased the land on the southwest corner of Lincoln and Pine. Architect Arthur S. Coffin designed the Norman-style stone structure, with plans approved on October 27, 1904. The cornerstone was laid on January 15, 1905, and the building was dedicated on February 4, 1906, with services attended by congregation members and notable guests. A bronze tablet containing the Salem Covenant of 1629, a gift from Mrs. Douglas Smith in 1906, remains on the southeast wall. Windows and electric lights were donated by church member families in memory of loved ones. The building served as the main church until 1936, when a new sanctuary was dedicated, after which this structure became known as the Children's Chapel.
