Music Institute of Chicago

Music Institute of Chicago is a music school in Winnetka, IL. It offers private lessons and group classes for beginners, casual learners, and aspiring professionals, along with performance opportunities. Founded in 1931 by Dorothy and David Dushkin, the school began as a small community music school in a Winnetka farmhouse and has grown into one of the largest music schools in the country. Each year it provides personalized music instruction to nearly 2,000 students of all ages, experience levels, and financial means across eight campus locations in Chicago, Downers Grove, Evanston, Lake Forest, and Winnetka. It holds a rating of 4.70 from the customers who have reviewed it.

The school is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community music school. Its programs are designed so that every student can gain the creative, social, cultural, and brain-building benefits of playing an instrument. Instruction is led by a faculty the school describes as first-rate, and its stated values are innovation, access, and excellence. Beginning in fall 2026, the school will expand its early childhood offerings by introducing The Royal Conservatory of Music Smart Start program. A new partnership with Lyric Opera of Chicago launches in the 2026-27 season. The school also runs the Chicago Duo Piano Festival, and alumna Maddie Stephenson will premiere a new composition, Through Time, at the 2026 festival, performed by MIC Piano Duo in Residence Claire Aebersold Neiweem and Ralph Neiweem. Nichols Concert Hall, a 550-seat performance space in Evanston, hosts master classes, recording sessions, and recitals and engages more than 10,000 individuals annually. Community service programs integrate arts curriculum and provide professional development.

The Winnetka campus sits on Green Bay Road, next to Robert E. Burke Memorial Park and about a tenth of a mile from North Shore Country Day School. The Winnetka Police Department and the Winnetka-Kenilworth Fire Station #28 are both within about a third to a half mile, and Faith Hope and Charity School is roughly four tenths of a mile away.

The school has served the area since 1931 and is known for its faculty and its drive to ensure equitable access to music. For Winnetka families, it is a place to begin or continue a lifelong engagement with music, with instruction and performance under one roof.
