The funeral home's history in the region reaches back to its founder, Preston H. McGinnis of Princeton, Iowa, one of the early Scott County undertakers. In the early 1900s the McGinnis family moved to Bettendorf and established the funeral home in a downtown storefront, relocating in 1923 to its present location along the banks of the Mississippi River. Preston and Rebecca McGinnis' daughters became schoolteachers, while their sons Nelson, Roy and Finley all became morticians, and the business was at one time advertised as owned and operated by a father and three sons. Finley McGinnis and his brothers and sisters operated the funeral home for nearly 60 years before retiring in 1979. The building at 644 River Drive was constructed in 1897 by Captain August E. Reimers, a Civil War veteran and later a steamboat pilot, in a Queen Anne architectural style, and the Reimers family lived there until the McGinnis family acquired it in 1923.
