The property sits on a scenic hillside across the Wisconsin River from Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, with origins dating to the 1840s when Hungarian nobleman Agoston Haraszthy planted the first grapevines there. After Haraszthy left for California in 1849, German immigrant Peter Kehl took over the land, building the structures that still stand today, which include a dance hall, carriage house, and wine cellars constructed between 1858 and 1867. The Kehl family produced wine from native grape varieties and fortified it with brandy until a hard winter in 1899 forced them to convert the property into a conventional dairy farm. Following Prohibition, the site remained a farm for several generations until Bob and JoAnn Wollersheim purchased the property in 1972. They reopened the winery for tours the following year, experimenting with grape varieties suitable for Wisconsin. In 1985, French winemaker Philippe Coquard joined the team, later becoming the winemaker and helping to create Prairie Fumé, which became the winery’s most popular wine.

The winery is family-owned and run, with the Coquard family and the Wollersheim family working together in winemaking, distilling, marketing, and vineyard operations. The facility includes fermentation rooms, offices, a bottling room, a stillhouse, and a big room for aging. The Wollersheim Distillery produces spirits such as Round Top Rye finished in a Maple Syrup Barrel, and the bistro offers reservable experiences and seasonal food. The grounds also host Summer Serenade events featuring live music in the wine garden and distillery patio.
