The practice was founded in 1932 by Green Bay native Charles Taft Hanaway, who began his law career here after graduating from the University of Wisconsin. His law practice was interrupted in 1942 while he served as an FBI special agent. He returned to Green Bay in 1945 and formed the law firm of Hanaway and Byrnes with then-Congressman John Byrnes, who later remained in Washington, D.C. after retiring from Congress.
