Tacoma Capoeira Center (Capoeira Vida)

Tacoma Capoeira Center (Capoeira Vida) is a Martial Arts School in Lakeland North, WA, located at 759 Broadway. The center offers free Capoeira Angola classes to youth and adults throughout Pierce County and the South Sound, combining movement, music, and self-defense. Programs include youth classes for ages six and up, adult classes designed for all experience levels, and monthly Capoeira Rodas, which are community gatherings featuring traditional music and dynamic games. The center holds a 5.00 rating based on customer reviews.

Established in 2011 by Mestre Mangangá (Syed Taqi) and collaborator Contramestre Galo, the center was founded to bring the first Capoeira Angola classes to Pierce County. It preserves the authentic traditions of Capoeira Angola, a centuries-old African-Brazilian art form blending martial arts, dance, music, and philosophy. In 2024, the center transitioned into a 100% free nonprofit program called Capoeira Vida, powered by Tasveer, with funding from the City of Tacoma, Tacoma Creates, ArtsFund, ArtsWA, and other supporters. The program is designed to uplift historically marginalized communities by providing equitable access to cultural education, physical movement, and practical self-defense tactics.

Instruction at the Tacoma location is led by True "De Verdade" Rasuli Emeka, an Afro-Indigenous Seattle Angoleiro, working under the guidance and lineage of Mestre Mangangá, a practitioner with over 27 years of experience dedicated to preserving Capoeira Angola. Mestre Mangangá also founded the non-profit Capoeira Life to bring free and low-cost Capoeira programs to at-risk youth in King and Pierce Counties. In 2018, the center hosted Grande Mestre Nô, a Master of Masters born in Bahia, Brazil, whose career in Capoeira Angola spans over 76 years and who makes annual visits to Seattle.

With a perfect 5.00 rating from its customers, the center has built a strong reputation for delivering accessible, community-supported cultural arts and fostering an inclusive environment for practitioners in the Tacoma area.
