The word “Chiropractic” is derived from the Greek words “cheir” (hand) and “praktos” (done), meaning “done by hand.” Daniel David Palmer, the developer of chiropractic care, chose this name. In 1895, D.D. Palmer performed a chiropractic adjustment on Harvey Lillard, a partially deaf janitor, who reported improved hearing. D.D. Palmer opened the first chiropractic school two years later. Chiropractic doctors undergo a minimum of four years of schooling at a chiropractic college, preceded by an undergraduate degree in basic sciences or relevant healthcare experience.
