Abel Mountain Campground

Abel Mountain Campground is a campground and RV park in Randolph, Vermont, overlooking the Third Branch of the White River. It offers 131 spacious, grassy sites, 117 of them with water, electric and sewer hookups and 14 with water and electric; all sites have 20/30/50 amp service, a picnic table and a large fire ring. About half the sites are open to overnight guests and the rest are held by long-term campers. Amenities include a 40' x 60' heated pool, clean modern bathhouses with free metered showers, two playgrounds, shuffleboard, basketball and tetherball, a small camp store selling ice, propane and firewood, coin-op laundry, Wi-Fi, lawn games and board games to loan, mobile pump-out service and a dump station. Guests swim, tube the river, play horseshoes, dance and join bingo and other scheduled activities through the season. Review ratings average between 4.5 and 5.

The campground began in 1968, when Gordon and Sally Abel created Mobile Acres Campground on the banks of the Third Branch of the White River. The Mendl family took over its care in 1993, and the Rea family bought it in 2003, completing improvements that brought the then 101-site campground up to date and renaming it Abel Mountain Campground to honor its founders. The Reas added 30 more sites in 2010. Hurricane Irene destroyed the lower section in August 2011 and the campground closed; the Reas rebuilt and reopened a new and improved campground in the summer of 2012 with new infrastructure, a pool and a pavilion. Ken and Sylvia Manning became the owners in April 2016, continuing to provide a family camping destination with activities and entertainment for all ages. A trail map leads through roughly 260 acres of trails across the river.

The campground sits on Mobile Acres Road, about half a mile from the Third Branch of the White River and under a mile from the Braintree Town Office. Thayer Brook is roughly a mile away, Vermont Route 12A about 1.3 miles, and South Branch School about 1.4 miles.
