Founder and Artistic Director Alzine Cuppett (1927-2012) began her dance training with Gene Kelly and later performed as a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall. She started teaching dance in the recreation room of her first home on Frederick Street in Vienna in 1962, after being persuaded by Mother Catherine Loyola, the local Catholic school principal, to teach kindergartners. A new house on Old Courthouse Road followed in 1965, complete with a fully equipped dance studio, and in 1980 the studio signed its first commercial lease at 135 Park Street SE, was incorporated, and became known as the Cuppett Performing Arts Center. The Park Street studio opened in October 1980. Alzine Cuppett directed the school for over 50 years until her passing in 2012. Her youngest daughter, Amy Cuppett, has served as Managing Artistic Director since 2002 and is Owner and Co-Artistic Director. Amy studied with the Cuppett School of Dance and the Washington Ballet School, attended Dance Masters of America's Teacher's Training School at Kent State University, earned a B.S. in Finance from O.D.U. in 1992, and was recognized as a Virginia Governor's School Outstanding Educator in 2004. Lisa Grau serves as Co-Artistic Director and Cecchetti Director. The studio operates from an 8,200-square-foot facility with five professional studios in downtown Vienna, behind Whole Foods Market off Maple Avenue (Rt. 123), in the Park Plaza Center. It has served the Vienna community for more than 60 years.
