Established in the Chelsea neighborhood of Norfolk, Virginia, Benchtop Brewing is a craft brewing company founded on scientific innovation. Owners Eric and Talia operate the family-owned small business. Eric, a North Carolina State Alumni with a Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, spent fifteen years in research and development, quality control, and consumer insights as a food scientist before opening the brewery in 2015. He created a US Patented process for a major food manufacturer prior to this transition. Talia, originally from North Carolina, joined the team in 2018 as Operations Manager after seventeen years in the medical field as a Nurse Manager. Together they blend scientific precision with artistic freedom to create a unique tasting experience.

The brewery uses local ingredients to produce a creative and bold beer experience. Twelve revolving taps offer a diverse array of flavors, including flagship IPAs, carefully crafted Pilsners, and culinary-inspired creations. Notable beers include the Quick Pickle Gose, foeder conditioned lagers, and the Oyster Gose. The Oyster Gose features freshly harvested local oysters that add richness and gentle salinity, complementing lemony tartness from Lactobacillus and a citrus burst from Indian Coriander and lemon zest. This beer earned a Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2017. The tasting room serves as a hub for the local community, offering a collaborative atmosphere for all to enjoy.
