The story begins with Ben Ojeda, born in Lockhart, Texas, who met Cecilia Ruiz in Shreveport, Louisiana at a Mexican restaurant. They married a few months later, and during World War II Ben served as a US Army cook, whose food rations were enhanced with native peppers and veggies. Word of his cooking spread, and higher ranks requested his cuisine. After the war Ben worked in many Dallas restaurant kitchens while Cecilia raised their nine children, five girls and four boys, and babysat four to six more kids to help ends meet. In 1969, after hard work and a little savings, the couple leased the Peter Pan Grill on the corner of Maple Avenue and Lucas Street in Dallas and renamed it Ojeda's Mexican Restaurant. A 1971 story by Channel 13 reporter Lee Clark on the Mom and Pop business and its nine children helped put Ojeda's on the map.
The DeSoto location sits on N Hampton Road, about 0.1 miles from the Desoto Heliport and 0.2 miles from West Danieldale Road. Hickory Trail Hospital is roughly 0.6 miles away, Faith Family Academy of Oak Cliff about 0.7 miles, and Hulcy Park about 0.8 miles.
Ojeda's is known for its positive customer rating, and its kitchen has been turning out Tex-Mex in the Dallas area since 1969.
