Marfa itself is the county seat of Presidio County, sitting at the junction of US Highway 90 and 67 in the northeastern part of the county. It was established in 1883 as a water stop and freight headquarters for the Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio Railway, and was reportedly named by the wife of a railroad executive after a character in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. The town's population reached 3,909 by 1930, and during the 1940s the government stationed the Chemical Warfare Brigades there and built a prisoner of war camp nearby; World War II also brought Marfa Army Air Field, an advanced flight-training base, ten miles east of town. Until the 1970s Marfa was best known for the Marfa Lights and as the filming location for Giant, with the Hotel Paisano serving as the center of activity during production. In 1971 the minimalist artist Donald Judd moved there from New York City.
The restaurant sits on Greens Prairie Road, about a tenth of a mile from William D Fitch Parkway and roughly two to three tenths of a mile from South Highway 6. St. Joseph is about half a mile away, and Spring Creek runs about six tenths of a mile from the location.
Marfa Texas Kitchen has earned a strong local reputation reflected in consistently high customer ratings, with an established track record built on a large base of customer reviews.
