The owners, a mother and daughter team, have been boarding dogs in their residence for nineteen years. They offer a safe environment where dogs run and play, aiming to provide a loving home setting that eliminates separation anxiety. The owners do not leave the dogs unattended and ensure one of them is always present. Because the dogs are kept together in a social environment, the business only accepts dogs that are spayed or neutered, housebroken, and up-to-date on all vaccinations, including bordatella. They screen for temperament and do not accept certain breeds such as Pit Bulls, Chows, or Akitas.

The business emphasizes treating pets as full-fledged family members, evolving from a desire to provide a second home where animals are not caged or frightened. This approach fosters close relationships with the animals, resulting in guests who enjoy their stay and are excited to return. The owners consider their service a cage-free dog vacation spot rather than a kennel, focusing on the emotional well-being of the pets during their owners' absence.

Critter Cottage is known for its positive rating from the customers who have reviewed it, reflecting the satisfaction of pet owners who choose this home-based boarding option.
