Founded in 1968 by Ben Kizer and David T. Black, the firm is supported by an experienced staff. Ben W. Kizer, born September 18, 1920, graduated from Maryville High School and volunteered for World War II. As a tail gunner on a U.S. bomber, his plane was shot down, and he was held as a prisoner of war for 18 months in a German stalag. He received the Purple Heart for being wounded in action. After the war, he attended the University of Tennessee College of Law on his GI Bill. He began his legal career as a solo practitioner in the early 1950s, concentrating on real estate title work, and served as a City Judge for the City of Alcoa. He retired in the early 1980s and passed away on January 3, 1996.

David T. Black, a native of Maryville, graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1966 with a B.S. in Liberal Arts and from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1967. He joined Ben Kizer to form the firm in 1968. Mr. Black served as an Officer on active duty with the U.S. Army Security Agency from 1969 to 1971 before returning to the firm.
