Camp Ho Non Wah is a Scout Camp in Wadmalaw Island, SC. Located at 2609 Boy Scout Road, the camp operates as a 184-acre retreat along the banks of the Bohicket River. It serves Scouts through the Coastal Carolina Council, offering programs that include over 70 merit badges during Summer Camp and Winter Camp. The camp also provides a 3-day summer camp experience tailored for younger Scouts. It holds a rating of 4.70 based on 192 reviews.
The camp has been perfecting its program since 1931, beginning when the Coastal Carolina Council approached the Bailey Family to use their plantation for a summer camp. That first year, a small staff held camp in tents in front of the original Bailey home, now known as the White House. The program’s success led to the camp being christened Ho Non Wah, meaning "The Land of Rising and Falling Waters," in 1932. Over the decades, the council acquired more property, building a dining hall, Adirondack cabins, and a health lodge. In 1943, Unali'yi Lodge 236 became instrumental in the camp's development, constructing a boat dock known as Hanckel Landing. The swimming hole was replaced by a pool in 1946, and Lake McGee was excavated to expand the aquatics program. The nature lodge was dedicated in 1951, and the Council Ring was built in 1957. After Hurricane Gracey damaged the White House in 1959, the camp continued to grow, becoming the first Bicentennial Camp in America in 1976. Renovations in the 1980s and 1990s updated the dining hall, trading post, and health lodge, with the White House restored to two stories in 2016.
Camp staff members, many of whom are Eagle Scouts and Vigil Honor Recipients of Unali'yi Lodge, teach merit badge classes and lead activities. Staff members include James Barton, who has served for over three decades, and Grandpa, an Eagle Scout with over 75 years of scouting experience. The staff sings songs at meals, puts on campfires and shows, and helps Scouts learn about the values of Scouting.
The facility is situated on Boy Scout Road in Wadmalaw Island, approximately 0.7 miles from Edith L Frierson Elementary School and 0.8 miles from Fickling Creek.
