Myrtle Beach Train Depot is an event venue in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a public facility for meetings, committees, receptions, activities, and parties. The city operates the building and makes it available to groups for a nominal fee, and two additional rental spaces, a renovated boxcar meeting room and a red caboose catering kitchen, are available either with the Depot or separately. Built in 1937 and restored and re-opened in 2004, the Depot has deep roots in the city. Atlantic Coastline Railroad and The Chapin Company jointly built it to link the mainland to the beach, and although it followed ACL's standard station design, structural enhancements gave it Mediterranean features that reflected the local architecture of the day. For the next three decades it functioned as the city's activity hub, welcoming passenger trains and serving as a vital supply link. In 1967, with train travel waning, Atlantic Coastline Railroad sold the Depot and 1.25 acres to a beverage distributor, which added offices, warehouses, and an enclosed two-bay maintenance garage that ultimately rendered the building ineligible for the National Register. When the property was put on the market in 1999 and a demolition permit was requested, a public outcry led the city to purchase the building and land outright. The restored Depot reopened on May 6, 2004, sixty-seven years to the day after the original ribbon-cutting, and in 2005 it received the SC Historic Preservation Honor Award from the S.C. Department of Archives and History. The great hall features exposed wood trusses, plank flooring, brick walls, and sliding freight doors, while the restoration restored wooden and concrete flooring, original trim, ceiling boards, beams, the roof, loading docks, and exterior windows, alongside modernized heating, air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical systems. The Depot sits on Broadway St in the heart of Myrtle Beach, about 0.1 miles from Main Street, Broadway, and North Kings Highway, with Nance Plaza roughly 0.2 miles away. With its National Register listing and its SC Historic Preservation Honor Award, the Depot stands as one of Myrtle Beach's earliest landmarks and a focal point for events that connect the community to its past.
