Blu Gorilla was founded by co-owners Tim Dennis and Alyx Baranow, who relocated to the SC Lowcountry after losing their previous shop to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Tim Dennis is a fourth-generation tattooist, descended from the Ron Ackers tattoo lineage that traces back to England in 1952. He completed his apprenticeship under Jacci Gresham, America's first African American female tattoo shop owner, and began tattooing on Mardi Gras Day 1994 at Art Accent in the New Orleans French Quarter. Over nearly eighteen years on the Charleston peninsula, Blu Gorilla has been voted Best Tattoo Studio by Charleston City Paper readers for fifteen consecutive years.

Walk-ins are welcome at both the Goose Creek and downtown Charleston studios, and appointments can be booked directly with individual artists.
