Thrive Upstate is a non-profit organization in Greenville, SC. Formerly the Greenville County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, it provides services, opportunities, and support for individuals with special needs and disabilities. The organization serves people with intellectual and related disabilities, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, developmental delays, and people on the Autism spectrum. It is the largest and oldest provider of services to people with disabilities in Greenville County, serving individuals from birth through end of life. Thrive Upstate has been redefining ability in the Greenville area for more than 60 years. Founded in 1953 by a group of parents including Barbara Stone, the organization grew from a small group of concerned parents to serving more than 600 individuals across the Upstate of SC. The group changed its name from the Greenville County Disabilities and Special Needs Board to Thrive Upstate in 2016. The organization offers a wide variety of services and supports at low or no cost to families and individuals. Services include day activity and community services, residential facilities, and vocational training. The organization operates more than 80 different residential locations throughout the area. Day Services programs aim to enrich lives through activities in art, music, literature, horticulture, and community outings. Community Services focuses on self-determination, socialization, and community integration.

Tyler Rex serves as the Executive Director, having joined the team in 2017. Angie Ballenger has been with the organization since September 1997 and currently serves as Director of Day Services. David manages Human Resources, and Kay serves as a certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer. Jason Currin leads community engagement initiatives, including the renovation of Studio 1700, the region’s only music studio for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization is funded through the Medicaid Waiver Program, grants, and private donations. It does not have any religious affiliations.
