About City Roots
City Roots is a Farm in Columbia, SC. It is an 8-acre family-owned organic farm established in 2009 as SC's first urban farm. The business produces 11 varieties of greenhouse-grown organic microgreens in wholesale quantities for customers throughout the eastern United States. City Roots holds a rating of 4.70 based on 128 reviews.
The operation utilizes over 40,000 square feet of climate-controlled space across 14 greenhouses. Microgreens are USDA certified Organic by the Clemson University Department of Plant Industry. The farm does not use genetically engineered seeds or chemical pesticides. The growth cycle of seven to ten days allows for rapid scaling of production to fulfill orders. Crop plantings are scheduled to ensure microgreens are in stock 24/7/365.
Microgreens are moved directly from cold storage to receiving vehicles to maintain a constant cold chain. City Roots operates a small fleet of delivery vehicles with routes on the East Coast from Maryland to Georgia. The business can receive large tractor-trailers, box trucks, and small delivery vehicles. Microgreens are supplied to restaurants, grocery retailers, and food distributors in the Southeast.
City Roots is expanding onto a newly acquired 90-acre organic farm. Construction includes a new 73,000 square foot greenhouse, 2 acres of solar panels, geothermal heating systems, and a distribution facility. The carbon-neutral facility is set to be completed in Fall 2023.
City Roots is located on Airport Blvd in Columbia, SC, situated about a tenth of a mile from the Curtiss-Wright Hangar and a fifth of a mile from the Gemini Arts center.
