About John L. Dart Library
John L. Dart Library is a public library in Charleston, SC, serving residents with access to books, digital resources, public computers, and community programs. Located at 1067 King Street, the library offers services including notary appointments by reservation, color and black-and-white printing, mobile printing, emergency rental assistance, and a Makers Space. It supports lifelong learning through storytime events, educational workshops, and access to research tools. The library is part of the Charleston County Public Library system, which operates 18 branches and a bookmobile across the region.
The library occupies a building constructed in 1968 and named in honor of Rev. John L. Dart, a prominent educator and minister in Charleston. The site was originally home to Dart Hall, established by his daughter, Susan Dart Butler, who opened a reading room for the African American community in 1927. This effort helped secure funding from the Rosenwald Fund, leading to the formal establishment of the Dart Hall Branch in 1931. The library has continued serving the community for decades, with a mural honoring Cynthia Graham Hurd, a longtime employee and victim of the 2015 Emanuel AME Church shooting, displayed on its exterior.
The library is situated on King Street in downtown Charleston, near the historic heart of the city. Its location places it within walking distance of major cultural and civic institutions, including the Charleston County Courthouse and the SC State House, both within a short drive. The surrounding area is rich in history and architecture, reflecting the city’s deep-rooted heritage.
John L. Dart Library stands as a longstanding institution in Charleston’s civic life, known for its commitment to equitable access to information, community engagement, and preserving local history. Its enduring presence reflects a legacy of service, education, and resilience.
As a central hub for learning and connection, the library remains a vital part of Charleston’s cultural and civic fabric.
