The Charleston Branch Pilots’ Association was formed in 1890 to regulate the profession, which dates back to Ancient Greece and Rome. Prior to this, pilots competed against one another to reach incoming ships, a practice that led to the formation of the association to increase safety. The association established its central location and dock at Adgers Wharf, which dates back to the 1700s and remains the oldest surviving wharf in Charleston. The association’s operation handles 4,500 ship movements per year. Pilots board ships approximately 20 miles offshore of Sullivan’s Island by climbing a Jacob’s ladder hung over the side of the ship. The association maintains a 24-hour communications center and vessel maintenance facility at its Adgers Wharf headquarters. There are currently 20 licensed pilots for the port, all of whom have completed a 3-year apprenticeship and attained the rank of Full Branch Pilot.
The association is led by an experienced team including President Captain Walters, who joined in 1991 and holds a United States Coast Guard License as a First-Class Pilot. The leadership includes Crayton, a 1983 graduate of The Citadel, and Captain Cameron, who retired from the United States Coast Guard in 2007 as Captain of the Port and Sector Commander, Charleston. The association is dedicated to maintaining safety and preserving the environment while supporting the efficient movement of ships. Pilots navigate vessels through various conditions, including strong winds, precipitation, thunderstorms, fog, and shoaling. The Charleston Navigation Company serves as a subsidiary, providing technical and administrative services such as radio and boat operations.
The organization is known for its professional pilotage services and its history of maintaining maritime safety in Charleston.
