York Day Early Learning

York Day Early Learning is a daycare in York, PA, providing care for children from six weeks old through pre-kindergarten across infant, toddler, and preschool classrooms. The center serves working families throughout York County and also runs a satellite location at the York County School of Technology. The program includes a Twilight Care option that offers overnight childcare for parents on second and third shifts, including those in healthcare, manufacturing, and emergency response.

The center has roots that reach back to 1932, when Netta Ford opened an experimental nursery school in the carriage house of the Visiting Nurse Association headquarters at 218 East Market Street. Federal support from the Works Progress Administration followed in 1934, and in 1942 the Lanham Act funded operations as women joined the wartime workforce. The York Nursery School Association was formed in 1947 to carry on after World War II, and the York Welfare Fund, now the United Way of York County, began supporting the school in 1946, a partnership that continues today. In 1982, York Day Nursery and Kindergarten became the first childcare center in York to accept infants. The center moved to its current home on East Philadelphia Street in 1996, and a 2012 capital campaign added a gym, storage area, and outdoor nature center. The center was renamed York Day Early Learning in 2022. The leadership team includes Executive Director Sara Bradley, Finance Director Jody Chesla, and Interim Center Director Kiersten Tawney, supported by a board drawn from York Water Company, SEK CPAs and Advisors, Wagman Construction, PNC Bank, York College of Pennsylvania, United Way of York County, and other community organizations. The center holds NAEYC accreditation and participates in Pennsylvania Keystone STARS as a STAR 4 facility, and it also receives grant funding through PA Pre-K Counts to provide free prekindergarten to local children.

The center sits on East Philadelphia Street, roughly a tenth of a mile from East Market Street and about two-tenths of a mile from the York Housing Authority and the White Rose Senior Center.
