Founder James S Bastone, known as "The Chief," began working on cars in the late 1930s at Groetzinger’s Amoco in the East Liberty/Shadyside area. He served in the 17 Airborne Division in the European theater during World War II before returning to work at the station. In 1959, Jim purchased the business from Charlie Groetzinger, marking the beginning of Bastone Auto Service. His sons Jim and Frank began working at the gas station in 1959, handling road service, towing, and tire chains during the cold Pittsburgh winters.

In 1972, James bought the building at 235 1/2 Carron St, which was the old Carron Street Baptist Church built in 1900. After installing lifts and a ventilation system, the garage opened in the converted space. Larry Segal joined the business in 1979, and James’s youngest son Bob started in 1983, bringing an electronics background useful for onboard computer diagnostics. Frank’s son Carl joined in 1992. Jim Bastone retired on December 31, 2011, after over 50 years of continuous service to the East Liberty/Shadyside area.
