Plymouth Tavern

Plymouth Tavern is a bar in Erie, Pennsylvania, serving lunch and dinner from its home at 1109 State Street. The kitchen prepares classic dishes from scratch, with daily specials that incorporate seasonal, local ingredients, and the menu runs from appetizers and salads to entrees and desserts. Signature specialty drinks and a munchies menu round out the offerings. The tavern also hosts private parties for occasions such as showers, birthdays and wedding rehearsals, for groups of 15 to 100 people. The three buildings that make up the Plymouth Tavern each carry their own history. In the late 1800s the middle building housed the Erie Cut Rate Medicine Store, while the north building was occupied by the Public Grocery and Supply Co. In the years that followed, the second and third floors held several clubs, among them the Pickwick Club, the Erie Legion Club, the Marquette Club, the Knights of Columbus and the Foundry Foreman's Hall. The 1900s brought the Princess Theatre and the Grand Theatre to the middle and south buildings, nickelodeons that entertained Erie audiences for decades. In 1935 the main building was sold to the Eckerds, and Eckerd Drugs was headquartered on the site for the next 30 years. From 1965 until 1973, Tom Quinn fixtures supplied first-class mahogany coolers to many taverns and clubs, and both of the tavern's bars are his work. The tavern became part of this tradition in 1973, and its owners note that no two guests are the same, so the dining experience can be customized for anyone who walks through the doors. Hours run 11:00AM to 11:00PM Sunday through Wednesday and 11:00AM to 1:00AM Thursday through Saturday, with the kitchen closing at 9:00PM and a limited menu afterward.

The tavern sits on State Street, a short walk from West 12th Street, Peach Street and French Street. Five Iron Golf and the Erie Playhouse are each about a tenth of a mile away.

For more than a century, people have gathered at this spot on State Street to relax, converse and be entertained, and the Plymouth Tavern has carried that tradition forward in Erie since 1973.
