Troll Pub at the Wheelhouse

Troll Pub at the Wheelhouse is a restaurant in Dayton, OH, housed in a building with a long industrial history on Wayne Avenue, an extension of the historic Oregon district east of downtown. The restaurant is open seven days a week, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday, and serves a menu in a space that customers describe as unique, with food items including the hot brown, the beer cheese burger, and chicken tenders with french fries.

The building at 216 Wayne Ave was first built in 1868 as the Weustoff and Getz factory. In 1875 it became part of the Farmer's Friend Manufacturing Company, which was the third largest producer of agricultural implements in Ohio during the 1870s and operated until 1895. It was later converted into the Stoddard Manufacturing Company and Stoddard Bicycle Company, which sold around 40,000 bicycles in its first five years. In 1904 the building became Dayton's first automobile manufacturer, and between 1905 and 1912 it housed the Kinsey Manufacturing Company and then the Courier Car Company, a Stoddard subsidiary that produced 1,000 automobiles in 1910 to compete with the Ford Model T. After decades of use by furniture and plumbing companies, the property was sold to the city of Dayton. In 2017 a group of local investors purchased the building with a plan to transform it into apartments, retail space, and a restaurant. The dining rooms feature repurposed wood from the original ceiling used for table tops, hand-selected lighting from the early 1900s, and custom chandeliers constructed from old wagon wheels that reference the building's history.

The restaurant sits on Wayne Avenue, directly beside the Orville the Troll public artwork and a short walk from Trolley Plaza, with the Ohio EPA Southwest District Office nearby. The Troll Pub is known for its atmosphere and its setting inside a building that connects Dayton's manufacturing past with a contemporary dining experience.
