The business is family owned and operated since 1951, when Peter Yankush started Youngstown Microfilm Company on the east side of Youngstown, picking up medical records from local hospitals and converting them to microfilm and developing 16mm film of local high school football games. Pete's camera hobby grew into a camera store near downtown Youngstown, and Jim Yankush began working there after school and on Saturdays in 1977. Youngstown Microfilm opened in Boardman in 1986, and in 2006 Jim purchased the building at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road. The store was renamed YM Camera in 2008, and Robby Yankush, the third generation, joined after graduating from Baldwin Wallace College in 2015. A record sales year followed in 2016, and in 2018 the store expanded with a second-level Loft dedicated to learning and experience. In 2019 YM Camera won Digital Imaging Reporter's E-Tailer of the Year for excellence in online sales. Jim Yankush is president, Robby Yankush is vice president, Jim Stamm is store manager, and Julian Ford works in sales and printing.

The store sits on Boardman-Canfield Road, about half a mile from Mill Creek Park and a short walk from the Boardman Tennis & Swim Club.

That record sales year, the Loft built for learning, and the third generation now running the counter keep YM Camera a working camera store for Boardman and the wider Youngstown area.
