Almstead is a family-owned company that has been serving homeowners, businesses, and communities in the tri-state area since 1964, when founder Richard E. Almstead started the business as a one-man operation with a chain saw, some rope, and a station wagon. Richard later studied arboriculture at Cornell University and the New York Botanical Gardens before growing the company into a full-service arboriculture and lawn care firm. His sons, Kenneth, who serves as CEO, and Michael, who serves as VP, are trained arborists who now oversee four regional offices. The firm employs more than 100 people and operates a fleet of specialized trucks and equipment. Service areas include Lower Westchester County and much of New York City from the New Rochelle office, Upper Westchester and Putnam County from Hawthorne, Fairfield County from Stamford, Connecticut, and Bergen and Passaic Counties from North Haledon, New Jersey.

The office sits on Beechwood Avenue, less than a tenth of a mile from the New England Thruway and roughly the same distance from Main Street, with Huguenot Street about a quarter mile away. Sycamore Park, Washington School, and the New Rochelle Center for the Arts are all within about four tenths of a mile.

Since 1964, Almstead has built its New Rochelle practice around trained arborists serving Lower Westchester County and neighboring communities.
