The Center first opened its doors on Mother’s Day, 1966, as the first such center organized in the Town of Colonie. Conceived by Mayor Bill Cook and Edward Skinner, it initially operated in a donated house moved to Village municipal property. By 1978, the space became too small for its growing membership, leading to meetings at Village Hall and classes at the Colonie Community Center. With H.U.D. funding, an addition was built to the rear of the Village Hall, and the Herbert B. Kuhn Senior Citizens Center opened on September 27, 1981. The facility was expanded again on September 24, 1989, to accommodate more active seniors.

Anne Joachim served as Senior Citizens Director for the first 25 years, helping the Center grow through its early years until her retirement in 1991. Joan Leak, a lifelong community resident, became Director in June 1991 and continued to lead the Center. Holly Martini directs the senior kitchen staff and serves as one of the main cooks, also assisting with administrative tasks. The staff includes Senior Center Director Chrissy Lanza, Administrative Assistant Ginny Ritz, Chef Mike Martini, and Outreach Worker Joan Rueckert. The Center operates from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, closing during winter delays or school closings for the South Colonie School District.
