Founded in 1964, with construction beginning in 1962, Nevada Cement has manufactured and distributed bulk and sack cement in Northern Nevada and Northern California since then. Original design capacity was 540 tons per day. A second kiln, raw mill, and two finish mills were added between 1969 and 1970, and a coal handling and firing system followed by 1976. In 1986 a Fuller single stage preheater was added to the number two kiln. Today the plant produces 500,000 tons of clinker and 560,000 tons of cement annually, and the company reports producing and distributing over five hundred thousand tons of cement each year.
The plant operates a rock crushing facility, two raw grinding mills, two rotary kilns, three finish mills, 70,000 tons of clinker storage, 34,000 tons of cement storage, and an onsite laboratory. Each rotary kiln is eleven feet in diameter and three hundred eighty-eight feet long. The company operates two limestone quarries: the Fernley quarry, seven miles southeast of the manufacturing facility off Highway 95 Alternate, and the Churchill quarry, forty miles east off I-80 Exit 83. Cement is made by blending limestone with shale or clay and iron, grinding it to raw meal, and firing it in a kiln at about 2,800 degrees Fahrenheit to form clinker, which is mixed with about 5% gypsum and ground into Portland cement.
The facility sits on West Main Street in Fernley, a short distance from Main Street and about a quarter mile from the Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway. The Fernley Community Art Center is roughly a mile away.
Nevada Cement holds a rating of 2.90.
