The pharmacy has been in business since 1942, making it one of the oldest commercial establishments in Albuquerque. Its original owner, Pete Duran, was a graduate of Notre Dame and the Colorado School of Pharmacy, and as a resident of Old Town he wanted his business close by on or near Central Avenue, Route 66. In 1965 he retired and sold the store to his staff pharmacist, Robert Ghattas, a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Pharmacy. The business outgrew its location and in 1975 the pharmacy moved to its current location at 1815 Central Avenue NW, where it has been located since. In 2010 Robert retired, and his daughter Mona has continued the family business, sharing her passion in the care of their patients. The pharmacy has grown over the years, reflecting changes in the health and medical fields, and the business now includes a large selection of toiletries and gift items.
The pharmacy sits on Central Avenue NW, the historic Route 66 corridor, about a tenth of a mile from Manzano Day School and roughly the same distance from Lomas Boulevard Northwest. The Albuquerque Little Theatre is about a tenth of a mile away, San Felipe de Neri Catholic School is around two tenths of a mile, and the Old Albuquerque Post Office is about two tenths of a mile from the store.
Duran Central Pharmacy holds a rating of 4.70 from three customer reviews, reflecting a positive rating from the customers who have reviewed it. Family owned and operated for over 50 years, it has built a reputation across its pharmacy, diner and gift shop, and remains one of Albuquerque's oldest continuously operating businesses on Route 66.
