The club traces its beginnings to 1908, when Robert W. Nelson, president of the American Type Founders Company, stepped off the train at the Westfield Station looking for a farm with a lake. He found the Lambert farm, which spanned meadows, woods, and a lake just over the Westfield border in what was then Fanwood Township, also known as Scotch Plains. The old farmhouse was renovated and a concrete dam expanded the lake. A visit from his friend and avid golfer Wadsworth A. Parker, who remarked on the land's natural beauty and said "What a wonderful place for a golf course," led Nelson to build a first-class course. He named it Shackamaxon, drawn from a Native American term he understood to mean "a place where chiefs meet." The course itself was designed by Albert W. Tillinghast. Amenities today include a pool complex with an adult pool featuring calming waterfalls, in-pool loungers, a swim-up bar, and a pod spa.
