After mentoring with his father for over 14 years, James and his wife, Sarah, opened Tates Gallery in New Boston, NH, in October 2006. In 2021 and 2022, their sons Griffin and Brenden joined the business, with Griffin focusing on CAD designs and Brenden working as a bench jeweler.
