The pharmacy is part of a chain fully owned by its employees, with roots stretching back more than 140 years. The company traces its origin to 1884, when Mr. and Mrs. H.E. White opened the first H.E. White Drug Store in Jamestown in what was then the Dakota Territory. Mrs. White was the first female pharmacist in the Territory, and White Drug grew to 38 stores before being acquired by Thrifty Drug Stores, Inc. in 1985. Thrifty Drug itself was founded in 1957 in Brainerd, Minnesota, by Douglas Stark, Jack Lindoo, and Edward Olsen, classmates and colleagues from the University of Minnesota pharmacy program. Beyond retail prescriptions, the chain operates a specialty pharmacy focused on patient outcomes and has provided long-term care pharmacy services for over 30 years.

The pharmacy sits on South Columbia Road, about a third of a mile from Altru Hospital and a short distance from Oxford Park and Sertoma Walking Park. English Coulee runs roughly six-tenths of a mile to the north, with DeMers Avenue beyond it.

Repeat and referred customers reflect the steady reputation the location has built locally, and its place within a chain with more than 90 stores across five states gives Grand Forks residents access to a pharmacy system with deep regional roots and a long history in the Dakotas.
