The establishment occupies the lobby of the Patterson Hotel, which opened on New Year’s Day, 1911. At its opening, the seven-story, 150-room hotel was the tallest structure in Bismarck, a distinction it held until the North Dakota State Capitol was completed in 1934. The hotel hosted boxing legends such as Gene Tunney, Jack Dempsey, and Joe Louis, as well as presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson. It secretly served alcohol during prohibition and is rumored to have housed an underground tunnel connecting to the nearby train depot.
