Special Treasures

Special Treasures is a thrift store in Statesville, NC, located at 214 N Center St. It operates as a workforce development program for youth in foster care and beyond in Iredell County. The concept originated in 2011 during strategic planning meetings where youth in foster care collaborated with volunteers to develop a business plan and design the store. The store serves as a transformative environment where foster youth gain practical experience and life skills through daily store operations. Volunteers work alongside these young individuals to help them develop transferable work and life skills and discover natural talents and potential career paths.

Donations from the community keep the store stocked with merchandise and fund the programs and services provided to youth and young adults. Profits from the store and financial donations help set participants up for success and a purposeful life. Programs include a matching savings program, transportation, internships, job training, and college or trade school support. Cash contributions can be given in store, mailed in, or online through PayPal. Corporate support is essential to the mission, with local businesses partnering to provide help with donations, store projects, leaders and mentors for youth, training workshops, and internships. Businesses interested in partnering can contact 704.873.7015 or email [email protected].

The store also depends on volunteers who can give two to four hours and are invited to come by the store and fill out an application. Special Treasures aims to ensure that each youth involved leaves the program equipped with housing, transportation, educational achievements, long-term community connections, and a clear path toward a productive life. A critical component of the program is its mentorship connections, where youth receive guidance. The business holds a 4.20 rating based on customer reviews. It is open Wednesday through Friday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The mailing address is PO Box 125, Statesville, NC 28687.
