The business began in 1964 as Don Hill's Lock and Gun Shop, founded by Don Hill Sr., combining locksmithing and gunsmithing under one roof. After Don Hill Sr. passed away in 1995, the family carried the shop forward, retiring the firearms side in 2001. Jeanette Hill ran the business until 2002, when her son Don Hill Jr. took over and renamed it Don Hill's Lock & Safe. Today, Don Hill Jr. leads a team of six trained locksmiths, handling master key systems, restricted keyways, and safe work across the Triangle. The shop is licensed, bonded, and insured, and offers free estimates.

The shop sits on Hillsborough Road, with D. H. Hill Library just across the street and Gardner Arboretum roughly a tenth of a mile away. Hillsborough Street, a main road, runs right alongside the location.

With more than 60 years of family ownership and a 4.90 rating across 211 reviews, Don Hill's has built a steady reputation across Durham, Raleigh, and the wider Triangle. Family ownership since 1964 makes it one of the longest-running locksmith shops serving Raleigh and its surrounding communities.
