MERCI Clinic

Founded in 1996 by Dr. Ralph Redding, Beverlee Redding, the Rev. Caroline West, Sonya Moore of Religious Community Services, Matthew 25 at Christ Church, Monica Parker of East Carolina University, and community member Harriet Milde, MERCI Clinic was modeled after a free clinic in Roanoke, Virginia. It opened on August 20, 1996, operating one evening per week with two examination tables out of the Phoenix House, a drug rehab unit. The clinic was incorporated as a nonprofit on May 22, 1997, and moved to rented commercial space at 411 Broad Street later that year, seeing 10 to 15 patients each evening. In 2001, the board secured a grant to purchase the former ENT Physicians building at 1315 Tatum Drive, where the clinic operates today with three full-time and seven part-time employees. MERCI Clinic has been recognized by the North Carolina Association of Free Clinics as one of the most successful free clinics in the state based on patient outcomes.

MERCI Clinic is located on Tatum Drive, about a third of a mile from CarolinaEast Medical Center and roughly the same distance from both Neuse Boulevard and Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard.
