He worked for the Lutz-Jackson Funeral Home from 1928, continuing there through its later incarnation as the Lutz-Austell Funeral Home until 1947. He graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Embalming in Nashville, Tennessee in 1934 and became a licensed embalmer and funeral director in 1935. In 1943 he entered the U.S. Army, training at Camp Barkley, Texas and Fort Sam Houston, and served in the European Theatre from October 1944.
