After considering options in California and New York, he selected farmland in Lexington, NC, located less than five miles from his Richard Childress Racing operations. The property features over 70 acres of vineyards and 15 varieties of European Vitis vinifera cultivars planted across two sites: Richard’s Hampton Road Estate in Davidson County and Vineyard Crossing at the winery site. The terroir combines a humid climate, a long growing season, and gravely red clay soil.

The location serves as a gateway to the Yadkin Valley American Viticultural Area, North Carolina’s first federally designated region for grape growing. Childress Vineyards is one of the most prominent wineries in the state’s re-emerging wine industry, which has grown from 21 to more than 100 wineries since the year 2000. Winemaking thrived in North Carolina at the turn of the century, with the Sixth Federal Census showing the state leading all others in wine production until Prohibition in 1920.

Visitors can access a tasting room and gift shop daily from 10am to 5pm. A bistro serves lunch Monday through Friday from 11am to 3pm and Saturday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
