DeVarennes, having found recovery through the 12 Steps, left a successful insurance career to start the organization. The leadership team recognized that recovering addicts faced major obstacles beyond sobriety, including needs for food, clothing, transportation, life skills, and employment. To address these, they hired career advocates, purchased passenger vans for transportation to work and meetings, and developed education programs that included 12-step and Christ-centered teachings alongside life skills and leadership training. By 2002, they were providing over 1,000 meals daily.

In 2002, Sober Living America was formed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to provide food and clothing to Peachford clients, expanding to 2,000 meals daily by 2007. In 2010, Sober Living America took over the mission of Peachford House. The organization launched a jobs program that included career guidance, job readiness training, and job placement assistance. They created a 12-step and Christ-focused treatment curriculum to help individuals break the chains of addiction. Today, Sober Living America houses 2,000 individuals daily throughout 47 locations. They offer intensive recovery programs, such as the Pinnacle Program, which includes four classes per day and sessions with state-licensed counselors.
