The Karrer-Simpson story began in 1905 when Benjamin J. Karrer Jr. purchased the undertaking business of John W. Kelly and directed his first funeral on July 5 of that year. B. J. Karrer had trained in Detroit and at a Chicago mortuary college before earning his state embalmers license in 1904. The original office was at the corner of Superior and Broad Street, where viewings and funerals were still conducted in family homes and churches. In 1923, Karrer purchased a residence at Ontario and Broad Street (now McMorran Boulevard), establishing the first dedicated funeral home facility in the city. The firm was renamed Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home in 1948 when Karrer's son-in-law Howard A. Simpson became a partner; Simpson had been an employee since 1930 and held his state embalmers license from 1933. The current facility on Elk Street at Pine Grove Avenue opened in 1965, the same year Thomas K. Simpson joined as a funeral director after completing mortuary school at Wayne State University. Today, Thomas Simpson manages the firm alongside funeral director David M. Walsh, a 1985 graduate of the College of Boca Raton Mortuary Program who has served at Karrer-Simpson since 1990. Both are National and State Board Certified and members of MFDA and NFDA.
The funeral home sits on Elk Street at Pine Grove Avenue, a short walk from Optimist Park and Mansfield Park. McLaren Port Huron Hospital is about a third of a mile away, as are Jefferson School and the Fort Gratiot memorial. Port Huron itself sits at the southern end of Lake Huron along the St. Clair River, where Interstates 94 and 69 converge and connect to Canada Highway 402 via the Blue Water Bridge.
A solid reputation among the families it has served reflects more than a century of continuous, family-owned operation in Port Huron.
