The credit union was chartered by the National Credit Union Administration on June 9, 1953, originally as Central Paper Division Employees Federal Credit Union, founded by union employees of the Central Paper Division of the S.D. Warren Company in Muskegon. It adopted the Lakeshore Federal Credit Union name on March 5, 1997. As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, it returns its earnings to members through low-cost products and dividends rather than outside stockholders, and is governed by a volunteer board of directors elected from the membership.
