The company traces its start to 1955, when Red Brummel sold his house and used the proceeds to buy a hardware store in the Godwin Heights neighborhood of Grand Rapids. He made plumbing service calls while his wife, Louise, ran the hardware store. By 1957 he was working with area real estate developers to install new plumbing in homes and businesses, and that work led him to build one of the largest inventories of plumbing parts in the region, behind the slogan "Godwin's Got It!" The team includes a president, a service manager, an HVAC manager, a residential remodel manager, a residential estimator, a water treatment manager, project managers, customer service staff, and purchasing and accounting teams.

The business sits on Division Ave S, about a tenth of a mile from the Godwin Heights neighborhood and Godwin Heights Middle School, and roughly two tenths of a mile from Godwin Heights High School. South Lawn Park is about six tenths of a mile away.

Customers describe helpful staff who walk them through projects, professional and thorough repairs, and fair prices at the hardware counter. Godwin Plumbing has served the Grand Rapids area since 1955, and its long history in Godwin Heights is matched by a positive rating from the customers who have reviewed it.
